Project:  Food and Farming
 


Aims

The Year of Food and Farming began in September 2007 and is part of a DEFRA initiative to help children learn about farming, good nutrition and to understand what the countryside has to offer.  (For background visit the DEFRA News Release ) We are working with Bartons Infant School from Bognor Regis, Milton Mount School from Crawley, and St Anthony's secondary school throughout the year to produce learning resources which we can then make available at the end of the project to other schools through this website.  Chichester-based computer specialists Kontron UK Ltd have financed the transport costs for around 45 Year One pupils from Bartons Infant School to visit the Museum for the duration of the project.  News Release

Project Progress

October 2007 - Bartons Infant School First Visit

As part of their learning experience during the Year of Food and Farming an enthusiastic group of Year 1 children from Bartons Infant School came to the Museum to harvest potatoes on a very wet day! Making friends with Neville and Mac, our shire horses, and some field mice were only some of the excitements during that day. The children were able to take their harvest of potatoes and some pumpkins back to school. 

 
We're looking forward to seeing the same group of children again later this month, when they will be visiting our working Mill and seeing the process of grain turned into flour followed by a bread making session in our working Tudor kitchen.  We are very grateful to Kontron UK Ltd for sponsoring the transport for these and future visits for this class throughout this academic year.

 

January 2008 - St. Anthony’s School get baking! 

Students from St. Anthony’s school had a busy day during their recent visit to the Museum.  The focus of their visit was to learn about bread and the process of turning grain into flour.  The year 7 students got to work grinding grain using a hand quern before baking the bread in our working Tudor kitchen! Working with a member of our Interpretation team, the group also spent time exploring the Museum gardens and digging up leeks, which are often used as an ingredient in a vegetable pottage, prepared in our Tudor kitchen. We look forward to seeing the school again when they next visit to the Museum!


February 2008 - St Anthony's School and Tudor Textiles!

Year 7 students from St. Anthony’s School recently visited the Museum. As the pupils are currently learning about textiles, the Museum’s Schools Services team suggested they take part in our Tudor Textiles workshop, which provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to trace the processing of wool, from sheep to clothing!

The pupils tried their hand at carding and spinning the wool, which, as can be seen from the photos, was a great success. One of our dedicated volunteers was then on hand to introduce the children to the Museum sheep, helping them to appreciate the source of woollen textiles.
